What Are We Afraid of? Living Out God's Purpose In Your Life.
What is it about walking in God's purpose for our lives that scares us? Are we scared of the work that will go into it, or are we not fully trusting God that what He has planned for our lives since we were in our mother's womb will not come to pass. When I sit back and answered this question in my own life, I realized that I am scared of the journey, afraid of the difficult times that will come with living out Gods' purpose for my life, and like Peter, I'm afraid to step out of the boat, to step out of my comfort zone and to walk on water with Jesus for the intend purpose that He has for my life (Matthew 14:25-30). In order to step out of this boat and follow Jesus, we first have to believe that we have been called for a purpose that only God has deemed us to do. If we don't believe that we have been called, we'll walk around pursing all sorts of things that only we want and what our physical eyes can see. But it's not until we realize that God has called us for a specific purpose for His glory that we begin to step out on faith and see our purpose and the gifts that God has given us to do through our spiritual eyes.
When I think about my purpose, and doubting my own ability to fulfill God's purpose, I instantly think of Moses. If you read about Moses in the book of Exodus, God had called Moses for a great purpose, which was to lead His people, the Israelites out of Egypt. God wanted Moses to stand up to Pharaoh and to lead the Israelites out of Egypt and away from Pharaoh's cruel leadership. However,
when called by God, Moses instantly doubted his own ability to walk in God's purpose for his life as he was only looking at what he could not do without having God's hand on his life. In Exodus 3:10-12 God reveals his purpose for Moses life, and even though Moses doubted God, God comforted Moses, by letting Moses know that He would be with him; "Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt. But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt? So He said, I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.” Like Moses we so often doubt what God has called us to do. We think who are we that we can accomplish that, and we end up turning our back on the purpose that God has called us to do, not believing that we have the ability to fulfill this purpose. Because we are allowing fear to block us from God's purpose, we miss the fact that we already have the ability to fulfill this purpose. When God formed us inside of our mother's womb He already know the plans He has for us, and the path in life that we will take. And in that moment of forming us, God gave use the ability to carry out His purpose that He has for our lives. You see God is not going to tell you to do something and not give you the ability to do it. God doesn't set us up to fail, and so we have to trust that what He says will come to pass. And through it all God will be with us, just as he sweetly reminded Moses in Verse 12 of Exodus 3 that He certainly will be with Moses and even gave Moses a sign to show Moses that it was Him, God who called him.
Even though, God revealed His purpose to Moses, told Moses that He would be with him, and gave Moses a sign, Moses still doubted God and his own ability in Exodus 4:10-12. "But Moses pleaded with the Lord, O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled Then the Lord asked Moses, Who makes a person’s mouth? Who decides whether people speak or do not speak, hear or do not hear, see or do not see? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go! I will be with you as you speak, and I will instruct you in what to say.” Like Moses, I have had a very similar conversation with God. In fact, I was reading Exodus 4:10-12 when God revealed His purpose for my life. And like Moses I thought 'God why me, you know I get very nervous when I do public speaking, and you know my mouth gets dry. And besides God I have no idea where to start to fulfill this purpose. And in that moment I just heard God whisper to me, "because I have called you, and because you are mine." I still doubted God and thought God you know my past how am I going to do this, and God responded with the same words that He had just whispered to me. And it was in that moment that I realized that God was going to use me no matter what, He was going to use my mess and turn it into a testimony and a purpose for His glory, and I could step up to the plate willingly to walk in this purpose, or I could complain and argue with God doing it the hard way. But either way God was going to use me for His purpose and for His glory. And that even when I have those moments of doubt, God constantly reminds me that He will be with me.
And so I ask you today, what stops you for walking in God's purpose for your life? And why are we scared to walk in God's purpose for our lives when we should be very afraid of not walking in God's purpose for our lives. It's not going to be easy, and hard times will surly come our way, and the devil will surly attack you, because He doesn't want us to live for God and to walk in God's purpose for our lives. But as someone who I look up to dearly and love very much once told me, "the devil doesn't attack what doesn't have value." So walk bodily in your purpose and with confidence in God who created you, knowing that when it gets hard, there is great value on the other side of the hardship. So let's all rise up to live and walk in the purpose that God has given us. Others are depending on us to walk in our purpose, and God is waiting to receive the glory from it.
